AMS vs Snipe-IT

A factual comparison of Hives.cloud's AMS and Snipe-IT (open-source) for IT asset management — hosting, compliance, audit depth, and total cost of ownership.

What this compares

Snipe-IT is a popular open-source IT asset management system — free to use, self-hosted, and widely deployed globally. AMS is Hives.cloud’s managed ITAM product built specifically for Indian MSMEs, with auto-tagging in the HVS-{TYPE}-NNN format, 90-day warranty alerts, and field-level audit logging out of the box.

TL;DR

Snipe-IT wins on raw cost (the software itself is free) if you already have a self-hosting ops capability. AMS wins on total cost of ownership once you factor in hosting, patching, backups, and compliance customisation — plus AMS ships India-specific features (GST-aware invoicing on linked purchases, India support) that Snipe-IT leaves to the operator.

"Free" vs "subscription" — the real comparison

Snipe-IT the software is free. Running Snipe-IT is not. For a 50-person Indian MSME, self-hosting Snipe-IT means: provisioning a server (~₹2,000/month), installing PHP + MySQL, configuring backups, patching security updates, monitoring uptime, and taking operational responsibility when the database wedges on a Sunday.

AMS bundles all of that into a ₹199–₹499/user/month subscription. For a 50-user org that is roughly ₹1 lakh/year all-in vs somewhere between ₹50,000 (if you already have ops capability) and ₹2+ lakh (if you pay someone to babysit the server) for Snipe-IT.

The "free" in open source is licence cost. Total cost of ownership is a different conversation.

Where Snipe-IT is stronger

Customisation: Snipe-IT is fully open source. Fork it, modify it, extend it, integrate it with any internal tool. If you have specific workflow needs no commercial vendor will build, Snipe-IT is a foundation you can adapt.

Zero vendor lock-in: your data sits in your MySQL database on your server. No exit-migration cost, no API rate limits, no feature paywall.

Mature community: Snipe-IT has been shipping since 2013 with a large user community and extensive documentation.

Where AMS is stronger

India specifics: auto-tagging in the HVS-{TYPE}-NNN format (consistent across teams without training), 90-day warranty alerts (standard in India where OEM warranties are 1–3 years), GST invoice linking (so input tax credit trails are auditable).

No ops burden: upgrades, backups, uptime — all Hives.cloud’s problem. For an MSME without a dedicated IT ops team, that is the whole point.

Field-level audit logs by default: who changed which field, when, from what to what. Snipe-IT logs activity at a higher level; AMS logs every field mutation, which is what GST/ITC audits actually want to see.

The "who runs the server" question

Ultimately this comparison hinges on whether you have (or want to build) server-hosting capability in-house.

If your IT admin is fluent in Linux, MySQL, and PHP — Snipe-IT is a credible choice and the cost delta is real savings. If your IT admin’s primary skill is knowing where the printer toner is — self-hosting Snipe-IT will quietly rot, and you are better off with AMS where uptime is not your problem.

Choose AMS when

You do not have in-house Linux/PHP/MySQL ops capability, you want India-specific asset-management features (GST, HVS tags, warranty alerts) out of the box, and you would rather pay a predictable subscription than take on operational risk.

Choose Snipe-IT when

You have in-house ops capability, you want to customise the asset-management workflow beyond what a commercial product allows, or zero vendor lock-in is a non-negotiable architectural principle.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Snipe-IT really free?

The software licence is free (AGPL). Running it is not — you pay for hosting, backups, patching, and the admin time to operate it. Snipe-IT also offers a paid hosted tier for teams that do not want to self-host.

Can I migrate from Snipe-IT to AMS?

Yes. Snipe-IT exports to CSV; AMS imports CSV with auto-tag regeneration in the HVS-{TYPE}-NNN format. For a 200-asset inventory the full migration is typically a few hours including reconciliation.

Does AMS support custom fields like Snipe-IT does?

AMS supports the standard field set required for compliance (asset ID, category, model, serial, purchase, warranty, assignee, status, location, last-verified). For teams needing extensive custom schemas, Snipe-IT is more flexible.

What about the Snipe-IT hosted tier?

Snipe-IT offers a hosted subscription (USD pricing). That narrows the TCO gap but still leaves the India-specific gaps (GST invoicing integration, HVS-tag format, 90-day warranty convention, Hindi support) that AMS is built around.

Which is better for audit preparation?

AMS — because field-level audit logging is built-in and GST linkage is native. Snipe-IT requires configuration or reporting work to produce the same audit-ready artefacts; AMS produces them out of the box.
